You love the look of stained glass but don’t know where to start? It’s so easy and you’ve come to the right place! To get you started, we have gathered the most Frequently Asked Questions and suggestions from our instructors and long time customers. They were once novices too and glad to share their experience.
Do you have to be creative or artistic to make anything?
Yes and No. If a blank canvas scares you, then stained glass is the perfect way to be creative using a pattern as a guideline. You can start with instruction and easy to use patterns and add your unique creativity and artistry to create something beautiful. Once you are confident with using patterns and choosing glass, you can start to create your own patterns or modify one that you like. The choices that you make will create truly original pieces. There are so many terrific patterns out there that you won't lack for ideas, and no matter what you choose, someone is always available to help you with every aspect or phase of your project.
Do I have to be in good physical shape to take this up?
No. In fact, with a suitable work space, anyone can create amazing art glass projects. A good number of our students and artisans are active seniors and many people take this up because they find it therapeutic. There are even special tools available for those who have certain physical limitations.
How do I get started in stained glass?
Try our Beginner course where you and other novice students will receive all of the guidance and hands-on practice to make your first time project. Instruction is given step-by-step and you can work at your own pace. You'll will learn about the different methods of doing stained glass and walk away with three completed projects, too!
Is this a good way to meet people?
Absolutely. Many of our steady customers come here to socialize with each other, Gord, the staff, and the teachers. In the process, they exchange ideas, make gorgeous pieces of art to decorate their homes, give as gifts or even sell. You'll find them to be a lovely group of individuals who possess a wealth of life experience and are happy to share their knowledge.
Can I work from home?
Certainly. Many people have home studios, but they certainly don't have to, as Huronia Art Glass is always available during its hours of operation.
Is it expensive to equip a home studio?
No. All of the basic tools/equipment and chemicals can be purchased for about $400.00 Canadian. This will get you good tools, grinders, soldering irons and holders, and chemicals. After that , all you will need to buy is your glass and replace supplies
as needed.
Can I commission a piece to be made for me?
Yes. If there is something that you would like to have made, we will work with you to design exactly what you want to the size you need and make it for you.
Do you do repairs?
Yes, it's one of our specialties. We will work to match the glass to keep the piece as close to the original as possible. It's a true treat to see an item restored to its former glory
Do you sell at wholesale prices to your retail customers?
Yes. Many of the items that we sell in our store are set at wholesale prices. We have other items at wholesale prices for qualified customers.
Do you sell to studios?
Yes. To all of you home based studios out there, you should come to Huronia Art Glass to get the pricing you deserve and to use any additional equipment in our workshop.
How do I prove that I have a studio?
Just present your business license, and be sure that it is in a business that sells or uses the products that we wholesale.
What determines my wholesale discount?
In a word: volume.
